Sura Muzzammil

Sura muzzammil is one of the first surahs to be revealed to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

Which commands him to perform the qiyam prayers, and to continue reciting, contemplating, and reciting the Noble Qur’an. And that helps him to persevere in the message and the call and the burdens on them.

As surah muzammil concluded with the command to perform the qiyam prayer and tahajjud to the Prophet, may Allah prayers and peace be upon him, and whoever is able to continue to pray qiyam in all his days.

So, in the light of sure muzzammil, we will discuss the chapters in detail, starting with the reasons for the revelation of the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, for the purposes and meanings included in muzammil surah.

what is sura muzzammil about?

The detailed purposes of sura muzzammil came as lessons and directives to benefit the Muslim in his life so that he would be as close as possible to applying the Qur’anic approach, including:

  • Emphasizing that the qiyam prayer was obligatory in the right of the Prophet, peace, and blessings be upon him, and in the right of his ummah, so the Muslim is keen to perform this supererogatory prayer as much as he can.
  • Guidance to be patient with harm and abandon the liars is a divine order of his Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, so the Muslim takes this command and is keen to abandon the liars and disobedient people.
  • Worships are provisions for a Muslim in his life, especially those acts of worship that call to Allah Almighty. Every act of worship that he performs is an increase for him in the path of da’wah from what he encounters from the people.
  • Qiyam prayer is a visible sign of the degree of faith in the heart of a Muslim, so the Muslim monitors the degree of his faith through his qiyam prayers.
  • Striving during the day to seek the means of subsistence is one of the laws of Allah Almighty on earth, so Muslims do not stop seeking livelihood under the pretext of worshiping Allah Almighty.
  • The punishment of the deniers and mockers is hidden from Allah Almighty, so the preacher is reassured that everything he encounters mockers will be punished on the promised day.
  • Reducing worship is a divine facilitation for His servants on earth, so the Muslim does not force himself to do what he cannot of worship, but takes the concessions that Allah Almighty has legislated.
  • Adapting to the morals commanded by the Holy Qur’an is something that is difficult for the human soul, and nothing helps a Muslim in this except a solid rope connected with Allah Almighty.
  • The forms of abuse to which the Messengers of Allah – the Almighty – were subjected are countless, so the preacher should be reassured; Because no matter how much he encounters from the burdens of the call, it is nothing compared to what the elite of creation has been subjected to.
  • Understanding the Holy Qur’an depends on pondering it and deliberating on it, and in order to understand the Qur’an and the sermons, stories, and rulings it contains, a Muslim should reflect on his response to the Qur’an and deliberate on it.
  • Seeking knowledge is one of the doors of remembrance of Allah Almighty, so the Muslim is keen to seek knowledge and sincerely intends to Allah Almighty in that.
  • Qiyam prayer and the costs of worship are hard things for the human soul, so nothing helps in that except faith and a strong connection to Allah Almighty.

when to recite sura muzzammil?

  • It was reported from Al Tabi’in about the virtue of surah muzammil that they used to recite it 40 times after they finished the Fajr prayer, then they would ask Allah about their needs, then Allah would give them by His bounty, Allah willing.
  • It was also reported that whoever recites muzammil surah eleven times for eleven days, and that is in the morning, then asks Allah for something, the twelfth day will not come to him unless he has obtained his request.
  • It was also said about the virtue of sure muzzammil that whoever loses something and then recites this Surah, his lost will be returned.
  • It was also reported that whoever had a debt, then recited sura muzzammil with the intention that his debt would be paid, Allah will pay it off on his behalf.

Sura muzammil called for praying qiyam the whole night, or some of it, as it clarified the virtue of the qiyam prayer in bringing the servants closer to their Creator, and that the best time in which Allah responds to his servant is during the qiyam prayer, especially in the last third of it.

Because the one who abandons his bed and fights the pleasure of sleep is a sincere slave who does not Showing off in his worship, as he is a slave who is secluded with his Lord, far from people’s eyes.

And this is considered one of the highest meanings of servitude, and Allah praised these people as He described them as His special ones on earth, as He praised them in His Holy Book by saying the Almighty:

{كَانُوا قَلِيلًا مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ (17) وَبِالْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ (18)}.

when was sura muzzammil revealed?

Scholars differed in the order of revelation of muzammil surah, as the correct evidence converged that Surat Al-Alaq is the first in the order of descent, and it was said that Surat Al-Qalam was revealed after it, and it was said that Surat Al-Muddathir was the one that followed Surat Al-Alaq.

And Ibn Ashour favored this opinion.

Moreover,  It was said that sura muzzammil was revealed after Surat Al-Qalam, so it is the fourth in the order of revelation, and it was said that it was revealed after Surat Al-Muddaththir, so it is the third.

Likewise, the people of knowledge from the ancestors of the nation did not agree on the place of revelation of surah muzammil. Al-Mawardi said that the entire surah was Meccan, and this saying was narrated from Al-Hassan, Ikrimah, Atta, and Jabir.

Moreover, It was said that the entire surah is Meccan, except for verses 10 and 11, which are Madinan.

Al-Thalabi said: The Surah was issued in Mecca and all of it is like that except for the last verse of it, which was revealed in Medina, and it is a saying transmitted from Ibn Abbas as well, and it was also narrated from him and from Abdullah bin Al-Zubayr that the Surah was revealed in Makkah.

why was sura muzzammil revealed?

There are many narrations regarding the reason for the revelation of sure muzzammil:

1- It came in the reason for the revelation of muzammil surah, that the Quraish tribe met in Dar Al-Nadwa, wanting to plot from the Prophet – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – and invite him.

So the news of their plot reached the Prophet – may Allah bless him and grant him peace -, so he was sad and distressed, so he wrapped his clothes and fell asleep while he was anxious.

And Gabriel – upon him be peace – descended to the Prophet – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – at the beginning of sura muzzammil

As Allah said:

(يا أيها الْمُزَّمِّلُ قُمِ اللَّيْلَ إِلاَّ قَلِيلا)

And the revelation of the second part of the surah was delayed by the Almighty saying:

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ تَقُومُ أَدْنَى مِن ثُلُثَيِ اللَّيْلِ

Where the revelation was delayed for a whole year, so the Prophet – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – and a group of believers used to pray at night until their feet swelled.

Then the second part of the surah was revealed, and there was a relief for the Prophet – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – and the believers.

2- It was also said about the reason for the revelation of sura muzammil, what the Holy Prophet faced from the Quraysh conspiracy, and also because of the difference of the Messenger – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – from seeing Gabriel a second time.

After the first time the revelation began, and we can combine the two accounts in that the Messenger – may Allah bless him and grant him peace And peace – met the descending of Gabriel – peace be upon him – the second time.

3- It was also mentioned about the reason for the revelation of sure muzzammil, that the Messenger – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – when the revelation came to him, Gabriel – peace be upon him.

While he was in the cave of Hira, contemplating and contemplating the universe, and a dialogue took place between them.

Gabriel – peace be upon him – said to the Prophet – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – Read, and he said: The Prophet – may God bless him and grant him peace – I am not a reader. He said: Gabriel – peace be upon him – read. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to him: I am not a reader.

Then Gabriel – peace be upon him – said to him, “Read.” The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to him, “I am not a reader.” Then Gabriel, peace be upon him, said to him:

 اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ* خَلَقَ الْإِنْسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ* اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ* الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ* عَلَّمَ الْإِنْسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ

then the Prophet – may Allah prayers and peace be upon him – returned to his wife Khadija bint Khuwaylid – may Allah be pleased with her – trembling with fear, and he said, “Zamlouni, Zumlouni.”.

4- This noble surah was also revealed to address the effects of the revelation on the heart of the Prophet – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – and urge him to obey Allah Almighty, abide by his orders and stay away from what he forbade, and worship him day and night.

To strengthen the relationship of the Prophet – may Allah prayers and peace be upon him – with his Lord, and to recite the Holy Qur’an with contemplation and reflection in order to comprehend its meanings.

And to increase the remembrance of Allah – the Almighty – in all circumstances, so that the servant’s relationship with his Lord continues, and to be patient in calling and harming the polytheists.

Sura Muzammil in English text

  1. O thou folded in garments!
  2. Stand (to prayer) by night, but not all night,-
  3. Half of it,- or a little less,
  4. Or a little more; and recite the Quran in slow, measured rhythmic tones.
  5. Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty Message.
  6. Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise).
  7. True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties:
  8. But keep in remembrance the name of thy Lord and devote thyself to Him whole-heartedly.
  9. (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs.
  10. And have patience with what they say, and leave them with noble (dignity).
  11. And leave Me (alone to deal with) those in possession of the good things of life, who (yet) deny the Truth; and bear with them for a little while.
  12. With Us are Fetters (to bind them), and a Fire (to burn them),
  13. And a Food that chokes, and a Penalty Grievous.
  14. One Day the earth and the mountains will be in violent commotion. And the mountains will be as a heap of sand poured out and flowing down.
  15. We have sent to you, (O men!) a messenger, to be a witness concerning you, even as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh.
  16. But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger; so We seized him with a heavy Punishment.
  17. Then how shall ye, if ye deny (Allah), guard yourselves against a Day that will make children hoary-headed?-
  18. Whereon the sky will be cleft asunder? His Promise needs must be accomplished.
  19. Verily this is an Admonition: therefore, whoso will let him take a (straight) path to his Lord!
  20. Thy Lord doth know that thou standest forth (to prayer) nigh two-thirds of the night, or half the night, or a third of the night, and so doth a party of those with thee. But Allah doth appoint night and day in due measure He knoweth that ye are unable to keep count thereof. So He hath turned to you (in mercy): read ye, therefore, of the Quran as much as may be easy for you. He knoweth that there may be (some) among you in ill-health; others traveling through the land, seeking of Allah’s bounty; yet others fighting in Allah’s Cause, read ye, therefore, as much of the Quran as may be easy (for you); and establish regular Prayer and give regular Charity; and loan to Allah a Beautiful Loan. And whatever good ye send forth for your souls ye shall find it in Allah’s Presence,- yea, better and greater, in Reward and seek ye the Grace of Allah: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

To summarize,

sura muzammil is one of the Meccan suras of the Noble Qur’an that was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad – may Allah prayers and peace be upon him – in Makkah Al-Mukarramah.

After Surah Al-Qalam. Moreover, surah muzammil is from Surah al-Mufassal, and the number of its verses is twenty.

As sure muzzammil is located in the twenty-ninth part of the Holy Qur’an, the seventy-third surah The noble surah begins with the call to prayer, as the Almighty says:

{يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُزَّمِّلُ}

Where it dealt with an aspect of the life of the Messenger – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – in his obedience, celibacy, and prayer, and therefore the axis of the surah revolves around the Messenger – may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

So the surah was named by the name that Allah called him by and suited his condition in which he was wrapped/ مزمل in his clothes.
