Translation in English

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

285. The Messenger believeth in what hath been revealed to him from his Lord, as do the men of faith. Each one (of them) believeth in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers. “We make no distinction (they say) between one and another of His messengers.” And they say: “We hear, and we obey: (We seek) Thy forgiveness, our Lord, and to Thee is the end of all journeys.”

286. On no soul doth Allah Place a burden greater than it can bear. It gets every good that it earns, and it suffers every ill that it earns. (Pray:) “Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget or fall into error; our Lord! Lay not on us a burden Like that which Thou didst lay on those before us; Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out our sins, and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. Thou art our Protector; Help us against those who stand against faith.”

Surah Baqarah Last 2 Ayat Benefits

Surah Baqarah is the second chapter of the Quran after Surah Fateha and it is the longest chapter of the Quran. It has almost 266 verses and It also has the greatest verse of the Quran called Aayat al-Kursi (The verse of Chair). Baqarah means cow and It is named after Baqarah because it talks about the incident which occurred in the times and nation of Prophet Moses (Peace be upon Him). Other than that it talks about almost every basic thing about Islam from the Pillars of Faith to the rules and laws.

It begins with the Arabic letters Alif Laam Meem and with the 2 of the greatest verses in the Quran that holds the utmost impact spiritually.

The end of Surat Al-Baqarah has a special virtue for the Muslim while reading it, as stated in the Prophet’s Sunnah, so we will learn about the virtue of these verses in the next paragraph:-

1-The last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah are two great verses: between their greatness, Their reward, and the height of their status are many hadiths.

Including that it was given to the Prophet – may Allah prayers and peace be upon him – on the day of Isra and Mi’raj, but in the best place a creature reached – at Sidrat Al-Muntaha.

As It is narrated on the authority of Abdullah (b. Umar) that when the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) was taken for the Night journey, he was taken to Sidrat-ul-Muntaha, which is situated on the sixth heaven.

Where terminates everything that ascends from the earth and is held there, and where terminates everything that descends from above it and is held there. (It is with reference to this that) Allah said:

“When that which covers covered the lote- tree” (al-Qur’an, liii. 16). He (the narrator) said: (It was) gold moths. He (the narrator further) said: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) was given three (things):

He was given five prayers, be was given the concluding verses of Sura al-Baqara, and remission of serious Sins for those among his Ummah who associate not anything with Allah.

2- It was reported from her that Allah Almighty has exalted the value of some verses over others, and made the reading of these verses a virtue that no virtue can compare to, and among these verses are the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqara;

3- A light that no one was given before the Prophet, it is proven in Sahih Muslim from the narration of Ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with – the good news of Jibril – peace be upon him – to our Prophet Muhammad – may Allah bless him and grant him peace

Ibn ‘Abbas said that while Gabriel was sitting with the Prophet he heard a creaking sound above him, and after raising his head he said, “This is a gate opened in heaven to-day which has never been opened before.”

Then when an angel descended through it he said, “This is an angel come down to earth who has never come down before.”

He gave a salutation and said, “Rejoice in two lights brought to you which have not been brought to any prophet before you:

Fatihat al-Kitab (Qur’an, 1) and the last verses of sūra al-Baqara (Qur’an, 2). You will not recite a phrase of them without being given the blessing it contains.” Muslim transmitted it.

4-The two verses from the end of Surat Al-Baqarah are among the night remembrances that it is desirable for a Muslim to preserve. As he does not sleep before he reads it for its virtue and reward.

5-The verses included dua on many different topics. Then Allah sealed the verses with supplication and a request for pardon, forgiveness, and mercy.

6-These verses also included faith and some matters of faith, in order for the faith and educational meanings to take root within the human mind.

7-In addition to that, these two verses emphasized the need to believe in Allah Almighty and in what He revealed in His book, and in the messengers He sent.

8-Allah Almighty also emphasized in these verses the need to believe in angels. And follow everything that Allah Almighty commanded and stay away from everything that he forbade.

9-Allah Almighty also emphasized in these verses that He does not burden a soul beyond its capacity, i.e. what it can bear and that He does not burden a person beyond his capacity.

10-In addition to that, reciting the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah before going to sleep achieves great reward and expiation for the bad deeds of the day.

 Hadith

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, has also been mentioned in other hadiths that stress the importance of reading the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, among which we mention the following:

‘Abd al-Rahman b. Yazid said:
I asked Abu Mas’ud while he was making circumambulation of the Ka’bah (about the recitation of some verses from the Qur’an). He said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: If anyone recited two verses from the last of Surah al-Baqarah at night, they will be sufficient for him.

Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)

Narrated Abu Mas`ud al-Ansari:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “If one recites the last two verses of Surat al-Baqarah at night, it is sufficient for him (for that night).”
Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 5040

Narrated ‘Aishah:
When the last verses of Surat al-Baqarah were revealed, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out and recited them to us and siad: Trading in wine has been forbidden.
Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani)

Ibn ‘Abbas said that while Gabriel was sitting with the Prophet he heard a creaking sound above him, and after raising his head he said, “This is a gate opened in heaven to-day which has never been opened before.”

Then when an angel descended through it he said, “This is an angel come down to earth who has never come down before.”

He gave a salutation and said, “Rejoice in two lights brought to you which have not been brought to any prophet before you:

Fatihat al-Kitab (Qur’an, 1) and the last verses of sūra al-Baqara (Qur’ān, 2). You will not recite a phrase of them without being given the blessing it contains.” Muslim transmitted it.

Aifa’ b. ‘Abd al-Kila’T told of a man who asked Allah messenger which sura of the Qur’an was greatest and was told that it is “Say, He is Allah, One.”

He asked which verse of the Qur’an was greatest and was told that it is the Throne Verse, “Allah, there is no god but He, the Living, he Eternal.” He asked Allah prophet which verse he would like to bring good to him and his people and was told, “The end of sūra al-Baqara.

For it is one of the treasures of Allah mercy from under His Throne which He gave to this people, and there is no good in this world and the next which it does not include.” Dārimī transmitted it.

Narrated ‘Aisha:

When the last Verses of Surat-al-Baqara were revealed, Allah’s Apostle stood up and recited them before us and then prohibited the trade of alcoholic liquors.

Surah Baqarah Last 2 Ayat Topic

These 2 verses are about the Pillars of Faith. These pillars are as follows:

  1. Belief in Allah
  2. Angels
  3. Books of Allah
  4. Messengers of Allah
  5. The day of Judgement

These are the five pillars that don’t include the 6th pillar which is Qadr (fate) and which is mentioned in the famous Hadith known as the Hadith of Jibreel. Along with these pillars, these verses talk about various other topics and some supplications which can be only perceived by reading its translation. Let’s go through the verses:

Verse 285

The Messenger ˹firmly˺ believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. They ˹all˺ believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, and His messengers. ˹They proclaim,˺ “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and obey. ˹We seek˺ Your forgiveness, our Lord! And to You ˹alone˺ is the final return.
Verse 286

Allah does not require of any soul more than what it can afford. All good will be for its own benefit, and all evil will be to its own loss. ˹The believers pray,˺ “Our Lord! Do not punish us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord! Do not place a burden on us like the one you placed on those before us. Our Lord! Do not burden us with what we cannot bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our ˹only˺ Guardian. So grant us victory over the disbelieving people.

Hadith Benefits of Reading Last 2 Ayat of Surah Baqarah

Abu Mas’ud Al-Badri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying,
“He who recites the two Ayat at the end of Surat Al-Baqarah at night, they will suffice him.”
[Bukhari and Muslim]
Ibn ‘Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported:
While Jibril (Gabriel) was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), he heard a sound above him. He lifted his head, and said: “This is a gate which has been opened in heaven today. It was never opened before.” Then an angel descended through it, he said: “This is an angel who has come down to earth. He never came down before.” He sent greetings and said: “Rejoice with two lights given to you. Such lights were not given to any Prophet before you. These (lights) are: Fatihah-til-Kitab (Surat Al-Fatihah), and the concluding Ayat of Surat Al-Baqarah. You will never recite a word from them without being given the blessings it contains.”
[Muslim]

Benefits Reciting of Surah Baqarah

Surah Baqarah has a great merit that accrues to its reader, as we mention in the following:

1- Prevention from Satan’s temptation and misguidance:

Being keen to read Surah Baqarah in the homes is one of the reasons for Satan’s repulsion from it, and makes him despair of achieving his desire, and his goal is to corrupt the people.

And The evidence for that is what was narrated in Sahih Muslim, on the authority of Abu Hurairah – may Allah be pleased with him – that the Prophet – may Allah prayers and peace be upon him – said:

Do not make your houses graveyards. Satan runs away from the house in which Surah Baqara is recited.

2- Blessing:

Adoption of Surah Baqarah is one of the reasons for obtaining a blessing, which is achieved for Muslims by obtaining good deeds from reading it, from memorizing its verses, and listening to it.

Therefore, turning away from Surat is a waste of many virtues in this world and the Hereafter.

3- Obtaining intercession on the Day of Resurrection:

The intercession of Surah Baqarah and Al-Imran for their companions on the Day of Resurrection;

When it was proven in Sahih Muslim on the authority of the great companion Al-Nawwas bin Samaan – may Allah be pleased with him – he said:

I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying, “The Qur’an and its people who applied it, will be brought on the Day of Resurrection preceded by Surat Al-Baqarah and Surat Al- ‘Imran arguing on behalf of those who applied them.”

So the Messenger of Allah – upon him be blessings and peace – described Surah Baqarah and Al-Imran as two clouds. That is, the two great clouds of black color, between which there is light; That is, they do not cover the light.

4- Prevention and Sufficiency:

As a reading, Ayat Al-Kursi preserves and suffixes man from the demons of mankind and jinn.

5- The Companions – may Allah be pleased with them – revered memorizing Surah Al-Baqarah in their souls:

It was mentioned in the narration on the authority of Anas bin Malik – may Allah be pleased with him.

That one of the men who were writing the revelations about the Messenger of Allah attained that status. In reading Surah Baqarah and Al-Imran.

6- Persistence in reciting Ayat al-Kursi after the prayers is a reason to enter Paradise:

There are many ways to enter Paradise, and one of the great means supported by evidence from the Sunnah is to read a verse that is one of the greatest verses of Surah Baqarah after every written prayer.

Along with these 2 verses Surah Baqarah has lots of other benefits in general. Some of those are as follows:

عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال ‏:‏‏ “‏ لا تجعلوا بيوتكم مقابر، إن الشيطان ينفر من البيت الذي تقرأ فيه سورة البقرة‏

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: “Do not turn your houses into graveyards. Satan runs away from the house in which Surat Al-Baqarah is recited. [Muslim]
Abu Umamah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, “Read the Qur’an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection. [Muslim]
Narrated Aishah:
There was an eclipse of the sun in the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out and led the people in prayer. he stood up and I guessed that he recited Surah al-Baqarah. The narrator then further transmitted the tradition. He (the Prophet) then prostrated himself twice, and then stood up and prolonged the recitation. then I guessed his recitation and knew that he recited Surah Al-i-Imran.
Grade: Hasan (Al-Albani)
Narrated Abu Hurairah:
that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): “For everything, there is a hump (pinnacle) and the hump (pinnacle) of the Qur’an is Surat Al-Baqarah, in it there is an Ayah which is the master of the Ayat in the Qur’an; [it is] Ayat Al-Kursi.”

Abu Umama said he heard God’s messenger say, “Recite the Qur’an, for on the day of resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite it. Recite the two shining ones, Baqara and sūra Āl Imran (Qur’ān, 2 and 3).

For on the day of resurrection they will come as two clouds or two shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks* pleading for those who recite them.

Recite sura al-Baqara, for using it produces blessing and abandoning it produces regret, and the slothful are unable to recite it.” *The alternative may indicate that the transmitter was not sure which word was used, “clouds” or “shades”. Muslim transmitted it.

Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying:Do not make your houses as graveyards. Satan runs away from the house in which Surah Baqara is recited.

An-Nawwas bin Sam’an (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying, “The Qur’an and its people who applied it, will be brought on the Day of Resurrection preceded with Surat Al-Baqarah and Surah Al- ‘Imran arguing on behalf of those who applied them.”

The Hadith of Jibril (Peace be upon Him)

In this Hadith, the greatest angel Jibril came to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ impersonating a Human Being and asks questions about Eeman, Islam, and Ehsaan, and the brief answers of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ speak about the pillars and reality of these terminologies. This hadith also talks about the sixth pillar of Eemaan which is not mentioned in the verse of Al-Baqarah. The hadith is as follows:

It was narrated on the authority of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

While we were one day sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), there appeared before us a man dressed in extremely white clothes and with very black hair. No traces of journeying were visible on him, and none of us knew him. He sat down close by the Prophet (peace be upon him), rested his knee against his thighs, and said, “O Muhammad! Inform me about Islam.”

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Islam is that you should testify that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger, that you should perform salah, pay the Zakah, fast during Ramadan, and perform Hajj to the House, if you are able to do so.”

The man said, “You have spoken truly.” We were astonished at his questioning him (the Messenger) and telling him that he was right, but he went on to say, “Inform me about iman.”

He (the Messenger of Allah) answered, “It is that you believe in Allah and His angels and His Books and His Messengers and in the Last Day, and in qadar (fate), both in its good and in its evil aspects.” He said, “You have spoken truly.”

Then he (the man) said, “Inform me about Ihsan.” He (the Messenger of Allah) answered, “It is that you should serve Allah as though you could see Him, for though you cannot see Him yet (know that) He sees you.”

He said, “Inform me about the Hour.” He (the Messenger of Allah) said, “About that, the one questioned knows no more than the questioner.” So he said, “Well, inform me about the signs thereof.” He said, “They are that the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress, that you will see the barefooted, naked, destitute, the herdsmen of the sheep (competing with each other) in raising lofty buildings.” Thereupon the man went of. I waited a while, and then he (the Messenger of Allah) said, “O Umar, do you know who that questioner was?” I replied, “Allah and His Messenger know better.” He said, “That was Jibril (the Angel Gabriel). He came to teach you your religion.” [Muslim]
