There are various useful techniques for memorizing the Quran. One of them is the ancient Ottoman method also called the stacking method, which is still used in Turkey and some other countries, like Bosnia and Malaysia. It is believed to be the best hifz method as it includes the revision session and makes the hifz perfect.
Among the effective Quran memorization techniques, the teachers at Quran Spirit also employ this method for students who are sharp enough to follow it. Today, we will explore this method in depth, discussing its usage and suitability.
What is the Ottoman Hifz Method?
The Ottoman Hifz Method is also known as “Usmania” is based on 2 main key elements that promote effective memorization:
- Systematic revision: This method employs a structured approach to consolidate all the verses together through back-to-back revisions. Revision is innate in this process and students do not need separate classes.
- Consistency: Regular review sessions with perfect arrangement of pages are crucial for preventing the loss of memorized material.
The Ottoman hifz method, also known as the stacking system, involves organizing memorized pages in a bundled manner, one on top of the other. This technique is akin to building with blocks: you start from the bottom to create a strong foundation and then continue adding layers on top. Similarly, when memorizing the Quran using this method, you begin at the bottom and gradually progress to the top, stacking each page after the other to complete your intensive hifz program.

You will start memorizing one page per day, but starting from the last page of the first Juz’.
