What is the first tashahhud? | Quran Spirit

first tashahhud

first tashahhud is a dhikr that includes salutations and shahaditin (A testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger), which the Messenger of Allah – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – taught to his nation; To bring it when sitting in prayer.

Just as the first tashahhud is one of the pillars without which prayer in Islam is not valid, and whoever reflects on the words of at tashahhud finds comfort and reassurance in himself, as they are the words with which the angels saluted the Prophet of Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, Muhammad ibn Abdullah, during the journey of Isra and Mi’raj.

Tashahhud in English

It was narrated that ‘Abdullah said:

“The Messenger of Allah (SAW) taught us the tashahhud for prayer and the tashahhud for Al- Hajah. The tashahhud for prayer is: At- tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat, as- salamu ‘alaika ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmat Allahi wa baraktuhu. As-salamu ‘alaina wa ‘ala ‘ibad illahis-salihin, ashahdu an la illaha ill-Allah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluhu (Allah compliments, prayers and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah (SWT) and his blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah (SWT). I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger).’ (to the end of the tashahhud)”

Tashahhud in arabic

The formula of tashahhud narrated by Abdullah bin Masoud – may Allah be pleased with him – on the authority of the Messenger of Allah – may Allah bless him and grant him peace -: And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger).

This is the traditional formula mentioned in the at tashahhud, which was chosen by the Hanafis and Hanbalis. As for Imam Malik, he said that the best tashahhud is what Omar Ibn Al-Khattab – may Allah be pleased with him – said: “Greetings are for Allah, the pure ones are for Allah, prayers are for Allah…” and completed it as previously mentioned in the hadith.

And the Shafi’is said that the minimum at tashahhud is in saying: “Greetings to Allah, peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Peace be upon us and the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

Tashahhud hadith

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to say the tashahhud saying, “In the name of Allah. Greetings belong to Allah. Prayers belong to Allah. Pure actions belong to Allah. Peace be on the Prophet and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be on us and on the slaves of Allah who are salihun. I testify that there is no god except Allah. I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”

“Bismillah, at-tahiyatu lillah, as-salawatu lillah, az-zakiyatu lillah. As-salamu ala’n-nabiyyi wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. As-salamu alayna wa ala ibadi’llahi’s-salihin. Shahidtu an la ilaha illallah. Rasulu Allah.” Shahidtu anna Muhammadu’r-He used to say this after the first two rakas and he would make supplication with whatever seemed fit to him when the tashahhud was completed. When he sat at the end of the prayer, he did the tashahhud in a similar manner, except that after the tashahhud he made supplication with whatever seemed fit to him. When he had completed the tashahhud and intended to say the taslim, he said, “Peace be on the Prophet and His mercy and blessings. Peace be upon us and on the slaves of Allah who are salihun.”

“As-salamu ala’n-nabiyyi wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. As-salamu alayna ala wa ibadi’llahi’ssalihin.”

He then said, “Peace be upon you” to his right, and would return the greeting to the imam, and if anyone said “Peace be upon you” from his left he would return the greeting to him.

importance of Tashahhud in salah

The first tashahhud is of great importance in prayer, as there are some hadiths that state the virtue of al tashahhud, including the following:

Ibn Abbas reported

The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) used to teach us tashahhud just as he used to teach us a Surah of the Qur’an, and he would say: All services rendered by words, acts of worship, and all good things are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s upright servants. I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. In the narration of Ibn Rumh (the words are): “As he would teach us the Qur’an.”

In the words of Ibn Abbas: As the surah from the Qur’an teaches us, it is an indication of the importance of at tashahhud, and an indication of its obligation.

How to memorize Tashahhud?

With regard to the great importance of first tashahhud in prayer, a Muslim must master memorization well, as there are many ways to memorize.

So we will discuss them in detail:

  • The first method: dividing al tashahhud into small parts and memorizing it gradually until the Muslim masters its memorization completely.
  • The second method: memorizing at tashahhud through audio recordings by repeating behind the reciter or memorizer.

what is the difference between tashahhud and tasleem?

There is a very big difference between the tasleem in prayer and tashahhud, as the tasleem is one of the pillars of the prayer, so the end of the prayer and detachment from it cannot be achieved except by tasleem.

The majority of scholars, and imams Shafi’i, Malik, and Ahmad went to that, so he intends with the first to exit the prayer and tasleem the memorizers, and intends with the second tasleem to greet the memorizers and those on his left, and the worshiper intends by taslim to exit the prayer.

And peace be upon the keepers from the right and the left, who are the angels, and peace be upon the worshipers, his brothers, if he is in a group, and if he is alone.

Then peace means the intention to leave the prayer and greet the keepers. As for at tashahhud, it is a remembrance that includes supplication and greeting.

is tashahhud in the quran

First tashahhud, which is said before the salam of prayer, is an authentic hadith, not from the Qur’an. It was mentioned in several narrations, among which we mention the narration of Ibn Masoud,

in which: Greetings to Allah, prayers and good deeds.

Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. Except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. Bukhari, Muslim, and others.

In conclusion,

the first tashahhud is one of the pillars of prayer, and it is not valid to pray with it, as there were many hadiths that state the importance of tashahhud and teach Muslims how to do at tashahhud in prayer.
